Confirming Materials and Timeline
To verify whether a portrait was created during the lifetime of the person depicted, Art
Experts employs a combination of advanced techniques:
- Carbon-14 Dating:
Used to test organic materials such as canvas, wooden panels, or
linen threads. This method helps confirm whether the artwork’s support structure
aligns with the subject’s era.
- Pigment and Binder Analysis:
Through microscopic and spectrographic testing, we
identify the chemical composition of pigments and paint binders. If pigments were
introduced after the sitter’s lifetime, the painting can be ruled out as contemporary.
- Dendrochronology:
In the case of wood panel portraits, tree-ring analysis is used to
determine when and where the wood was sourced, offering further geographic and
temporal accuracy.
- UV and X-ray Imaging:
Reveals underdrawings, alterations, or hidden signatures that
may affect authenticity or provenance.
