He spent most of his life in Beijing, Shanghai, California (USA), and Taipei. He also briefly lived in Kyoto, Mendoza (Argentina), and São Paulo (Brazil).

Typical subject matter:

He typically painted landscapes and also extensively worked as a Chinese history painter, representing traditional Chinese figures, anecdotal scenes, and still lifes.

Typical style:

First known as a guohua (Chinese traditionalist painting as opposed to Western art styles) painter, he was later also renowned as a modern impressionist and expressionist painter, as well as a master forger.

Typical material:

He mostly worked as a Chinese painter on paper, although he was also originally trained as a textile dyer and a calligrapher in China.

He typically worked in ink and watercolour on paper and sometimes on silk.
