He spent most of his life in China, and also briefly lived in Hangzhou and Paris as a student. His time in France exposed him to Western art movements, particularly Impressionism, which later influenced his style.

Typical Subject Matter

WU Guanzhong typically painted landscapes, with a particular focus on trees, mountains, rivers, and cityscapes. Blossoming trees and scenic countryside vistas often appear in his compositions, as well as urban architecture from across China. Earlier in his career—mostly before 1960—he also produced numerous figure paintings, still lifes, and nudes.

Typical Style

He is renowned for his ability to merge traditional Chinese ink and brush techniques with the influences of Western oil painting, especially Impressionism. His works are a hallmark of modern Chinese art, characterized by a harmonious blend of East and West. His compositions often approach abstraction, using expressive line work, minimalism, and thoughtful placement of colour to evoke rhythm, movement, and emotion. Many of his landscapes possess a lyrical, almost musical quality.

Typical Material and Media

WU Guanzhong mostly worked in Indian and colour ink and wash on paper. He also created watercolours on paper and was active in printmaking, producing silkscreens and woodcuts. For his photographic work, he used the 19th-century collotype printing technique, which allowed for a high level of detail and tonal variation.
