He is renowned for his landscapes painted on scrolls, which often consist of a large, detailed composition accompanied by handwritten poetry. His work is highly meticulous and rich in detail, reflecting both artistic and scholarly refinement. He frequently employed subtle additions of colour—including green, red, and blue—although many of his works are created using black ink only.

Notably, Wen Zhengming typically did not paint water directly. Instead, blank areas of paper are left untouched to represent rivers, lakes, or ponds, following a refined aesthetic that values suggestion over depiction.

Wen Zhengming mostly worked in Indian ink and colour ink on paper, often using scroll formats. In keeping with classical Chinese tradition, his works were painted either on small vertical scrolls about a metre in length, or on horizontal handscrolls, which could extend more than four metres in length. These formats allowed for expansive compositions and contemplative narrative unfolding.
