He spent most of his life in China, particularly in Suzhou and Beijing. He also spent time in the imperial capital, Beijing, where he gained recognition as a court painter.

Wang Yuanqi was an influential figure in the development of landscape painting during the Qing Dynasty and is considered one of the key members of the "Four Wangs" group, which was central to the revival of traditional Chinese ink painting in the late 17th century.
