Died around 1551/52, Suzhou, Jiangsu, China, aged approximately 57–58.

He spent most of his life in China, primarily in the city of Suzhou, which was a major cultural and artistic center during the Ming Dynasty. Qiu Ying was also influenced by the artistic circles in Hangzhou, where he may have spent some time during his early career.

Typical Subject Matter:

Qiu Ying is best known for his landscape paintings, figure studies, and courtly scenes. His work often focused on classical Chinese themes such as landscapes, beauty in nature, and scholarly pursuits. He was also renowned for his delicate depictions of women, especially elegant, idealized figures in graceful poses, many of whom were painted in intimate, private settings. The women he painted were typically shown with elongated forms and flowing robes.

His paintings often featured traditional Chinese garden landscapes, with elegant pavilions, flowing water, and lush vegetation, creating serene and contemplative scenes.

In addition, Qiu Ying created works that depicted historical and literary scenes, especially those inspired by well-known literary works and mythological stories. His figures were often depicted in a harmonious, detailed, and almost poetic manner, creating a sense of idealized beauty that reflected the cultural values of the time.

His style blends traditional landscape painting with an elegant and meticulous rendering of figures. His works are noted for their refined lines and the delicacy of his colours, creating a sense of graceful movement in his figures and a tranquil beauty in his landscapes.

His landscapes are often characterized by lush, green mountains, meandering streams, and gracefully arranged pavilions, using light washes of ink and colour to evoke a sense of tranquillity. His figures, particularly of women, are elongated, elegantly posed, and portrayed with exquisite details in the folds of their robes and the serene expressions on their faces. The figures were often set against tranquil, idyllic backgrounds.

Qiu Ying’s technique also included the use of fine, subtle brushstrokes, creating depth in his landscapes and texture in his figures. His work, though highly detailed, avoids being heavy-handed, instead creating a sense of lightness and fluidity in his compositions.

Typical Material and Media:

Qiu Ying mostly worked in ink and watercolours on paper. He often painted on silk as well, especially for more formal works.
