He spent all his life in China.

Typical subject matter:

He is renowned as a Chinese calligrapher, painter, and draughtsman.

He typically depicted traditional Chinese mountain landscapes, alongside poems of his composition, and sometimes depicted isolated motifs of plants including bamboo and other tree branches.

Typical style:

His style is refined. He used washes of ink, giving an impression of watercolour. His landscapes are meticulously rendered and most often depict mountains drowned in clouds. For his landscapes, he used black ink, which he enhanced with up to three colours. For isolated plants, he sometimes used a single colour for the whole branch. His brushstroke is seemingly effortless and elegant, giving the impression that he was not pressing his brush against the paper sheet.

He mostly worked in Indian and coloured ink on paper, sometimes on scrolls.
