He typically painted landscapes accompanied by calligraphic poems. Some of his landscapes are also inhabited by a figure or an animal, constituting a direct illustration of the poem. He has also painted a few works of birds on branches.

Typical style:

Pu Ru worked in the line of traditional Chinese painters. As such, his landscapes are highly detailed and meticulous. They are typically very colourful, mainly greens and reds, although a few only comprise black ink. His foliage is rendered in small brushstrokes, revealing the shape of the brush’s hairs. He worked in washes heightened with black, the lines of which are more precise. His works often leave a large part of the paper bare, and include a poem written in calligraphic block letters, often in the space reserved for the sky.
