Chinese
Born in 1909, Jiading, Shanghai, China.
Died in 1993, Jiading, Shanghai, China, aged 83.
He spent most of his life in Shanghai, China.
He typically painted mountain landscapes, often crossed by a river or waterfalls. He also painted a few cityscapes featuring factories and electric poles. Some of his works are focused on a single, detailed human figure, typically walking through the surrounding landscape.
He is renowned for his way of cropping his landscapes, so that no horizon line is visible above his depicted mountains. As such, these mountain motifs are neither seen from too afar nor focused on isolated plant motifs. His brushstroke is very textured and vigorous, and he typically paints details in black ink, applied on top of coloured washes – mostly red and green – that bring life to his landscapes.
He mostly worked in ink and colour on either horizontal or vertical paper, sometimes on horizontal hanging scroll.
