Typical subject matter:

He typically painted mountainous landscapes, often with rivers, bridges, as well as a few traditional dwellings, boats, and human figures. These elements are arranged on different grounds, giving an impression of depth to his landscapes. Calligraphic inscriptions in Chinese characters organised in blocks are inscribed in the empty spaces, often above the horizon line formed by these mountainous motifs.

Typical style:

His work, produced over almost a century, stands out from traditional Chinese painting. It merges inspiration from Chinese traditional masters, including the Song, Qing, and Ming Yuan, with a sketchy, almost abstract manner that ultimately renewed Chinese art. His paintings have an almost chaotic appearance, as if drawn freehand. His works are a mixture of washes and more opaque touches of black or brown ink, sometimes enhanced with reds and blues. He typically leaves the paper background white to represent water, clouds, and the sky. As such, at least a third of the paper background is often left white.

Most although not all his paintings are vertical, and his seal signature is typically applied in red ink, close to the calligraphic text.
