He spent his whole life in France.

From 1956 onwards, he worked extensively in collaboration with his wife, Claude Lalanne.

Typical subject matter:

Although he started his career as a painter, he is best known for his sculptures of animals, both domestic (sheep) and wild (rhinoceros), to which he gave a utilitarian function: the rhinoceros becomes a secretary or a bar, the sardine is turned into a sofa.

Typical style:

His works of sculptural furniture are mainly imposing, human-sized sculptures, although he also produced some smaller decorative objects such as lamps.

In his sculpted, painted and drawn works, the lines are simple, rather synthetic and geometrical, sometimes giving the impression of children's drawings. The drawings are often sketches for future projects, such as plates and tapestries.

Typical material and media:

He mostly worked in bronze, copper and other metals, as well as glass and porcelain.

For his prints, he used serigraphy, engraving, lithography, and etching on paper.

For his drawings, he mostly used watercolour, graphite, colour pencil and ink on paper.
