He spent most of his life in Switzerland and France.

Typical subject matter:

He typically painted scenes of the modern Parisian everyday life - exterior scenes of Parisian socio-political life, such as altercations between citizens and the police, as well as interiors, often depicting one or two women, including a servant – a traditional theme in art history. These interiors often feature female nudes. He also painted still lifes of flowers and food on tables. During the First World War, he painted the trenches in an almost abstract manner, focusing on a geometric rendering of the effects of light and using non-realistic colours. Throughout his life, he also painted landscapes without figures.

Typical style:

His brushwork is very smooth, the surface of his canvases showing almost no impasto. His colours are bright and flat. His scenes are often characterised by an impression of stasis – as if the scenes were stopped in time, which gives his canvases a sense of a rather cold atmosphere.

His landscapes and figures are often highly stylised, treated in flat, bright colours, sometimes almost ornamental, with no depth of field or perspective.

In his woodcuts, his drawing is very rounded and closely resembles illustrations.

He mostly worked in oil on canvas. For his prints he used woodcut on paper.
