With the outbreak of World War II and the Nazi occupation of France, Soutine—a Jewish artist—was forced to flee Paris. He spent his final years in hiding, suffering from a debilitating stomach ulcer that ultimately led to his death in Paris on August 9, 1943. He was later buried in Montparnasse Cemetery.
