Brice MARDEN is a renowned American abstract painter. In 1964, Brice Marden began to modulate variations of grey in a series of monochrome paintings. From 1966 onwards, he composed his paintings by placing several single-colour panels side by side. Later, the line started to play a major role in his work, resulting in the pictures he is most renowned for today.
He is renowned for his line works. The line played a major role in his work: a sinuous, not angular line, almost calligraphic looking but representing nothing, crosses his canvases from one end to the other. In some works, they are agglomerated in places, and distributed in a haphazard manner on others. As such, they are depicted in more or less dense networks. His lines are sometimes black, sometimes colourful, painted on monochromatic – often bright coloured – backgrounds.
He worked in oil and wax on canvas. He sometimes used a single canvas, and sometimes assembled different rectangular canvases, either in the same or in different shapes. For his drawings, he used ink, charcoal, pencil, and gouache on paper. For some of his series, he himself composed his colours – with oil pigment, wax and turpentine – that was characteristic in that it reflected very little light.
