Agnes Martin is renowned for her abstract, geometric compositions. She typically painted and drew grids, stripes, dots, and sometimes dots in grids that resembled pictograms drawn with a very fine line.

Typical Style:

In 1963, she found her true mark of identification with the square covered with orthogonal lines forming a grid. Her work is characterized by purity and rigorous composition, where any figurative allusion seems outdated. Her canvases encourage silence and contemplation. Before arriving in New Mexico in the 1960s, she mainly used black, white, and brown. Later, her compositions evolved to include light colours that changed according to the light. Throughout her career, she rarely used more than one or two colours in her compositions.

She worked in ink, graphite, and oil on canvas or on paper, sometimes mounted on wood or on canvas. She also occasionally included other elements in her works, such as gold leaf and nails.
